The members of the Thoreau Piano Trio, violinist Susan Jensen, cellist Darry Dolezal and pianist Paul Jacobs, bring together a world of musical experiences, including performances in major American cities, in Europe, Asia and South America, in concert halls and recording studios, for live radio and television broadcasts and on major motion picture film scores.

The Thoreau Piano Trio was formed in 2011 at the Warebrook Contemporary Music Festival in Vermont, and is hailed for creating adventurous and innovative programs, connecting diverse art forms and collaborating with living composers and visual artists. They have been Artist/Faculty-in-Residence at the Brookline School of Music in Boston, MA collaborating with Boston area composer Martin Boykan and visual artist Susan Schwalb,, among many others. They are currently Ensemble-in-Residence at the White Lake Chamber Music Festival in Michigan; performing, presenting master classes, lecturing and mentoring young musicians and composers. In addition, the Thoreau Piano Trio is dedicated to cultivating chamber music and young musicians at rigorous teaching appointments including the Concord Conservatory, the University of Missouri and others. Their sense of adventure and love for all types of music is the impetus for their exciting, expressive and compelling performances in styles ranging from classical to avant-garde.

Susan Jensen, violin
Susan Jensen has concertized throughout the United States, Europe, South America and Asia. She was an active musician and recording artist in Los Angeles for more than a decade, performing with the Southwest Chamber Music Society and the critically-acclaimed contemporary music group XTET. She was a tenured member of the Los Angeles Opera, working under Maestro Kent Nagano and Artistic Director Placido Domingo, and recorded the Grammy-nominated Lux Aeterna (RCM Records) with the Los Angeles Master Chorale Symphonia. Her numerous motion picture scores include Disney’s Freaky Friday, Ice Age, The Matrix I, II and III, Pollack, Remember the Titans, Star Trek: Insurrection and X-Files, as well as the television shows Peoples’ Choice Awards, West Wing, Third Watch, and American Dream. She also performed on record projects for Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra, Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, Bill Medley of The Righteous Brothers, Aerosmith, and many others.

In 2003 Ms. Jensen relocated to Denver to join the prize-winning Da Vinci String Quartet, which included a vigorous national touring schedule, a faculty appointment at the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music, and an artist residency at Colorado College in Colorado Springs.

During 2005-2007, Ms. Jensen lived and worked in Boston, performing with the Boston Ballet, the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, the Chamber Orchestra of Boston, the Boston Landmarks Orchestra and various chamber music ensembles. In 2007, Ms. Jensen joined the faculty of the University of Missouri-Columbia as Assistant Professor of Violin and member of the Esterhazy Quartet. As a member of the quartet, she toured the U.S. and Brazil, commissioned and recorded works by James Willey, Samuel Adler and others. As a soloist, Jensen commissioned, premiered and recorded Grammy-nominated “Violin Concerto with American Gamelan Orchestra” by Bill Alves in Los Angeles, CA. In 2013 Jensen commissioned and premiered “Wound” by Denver based composer, Conrad Kehn, written for “singing violinist” with original text and music by Kehn and extended techniques for the violinist.

Ms. Jensen received the Bachelor of Music degree from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where she studied with Dorothy DeLay and the LaSalle and Tokyo string quartets. A student of Eudice Shapiro, she earned the Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California. During her tenure there she was an Alpert Merit Scholar, a recipient of the George Kast Music Achievement Award and winner of a violin fellowship at the Manchester Music Festival.

Darry Dolezal, cello
Darry Dolezal has performed over a thousand concerts, in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall in New York City to the Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro. His recordings and live performances are frequently heard on radio and television, including broadcasts from WNYC in New York, WFMT in Chicago, CBC Radio and Television in Canada, TV Cultura in Brazil and Netherlands Public Radio. Mr. Dolezal has recorded for the Albany, Capstone, Centaur, CRI and Naxos labels.

Living in Boston during the eighties and nineties, Mr. Dolezal performed with several chamber ensembles, including the Eos Ensemble, Trio Cantabile, the Lennox Chamber Players, Alea III, Composers in Red Sneakers, Underground Composers, and the Artaria Quartet of Boston, named “one of the ten best young string quartets in the world” by the Banff International String Quartet Competition.

After leaving Boston, Mr. Dolezal was selected for a prestigious National Endowment for the Arts Rural Residency, followed by an artist-in-residence position at Viterbo College in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Currently he is cellist of one of America’s longest-standing Resident Ensembles, the Esterhazy Quartet of the University of Missouri-Columbia.

In 2006 Darry Dolezal was chosen as a “musician of note” by the U.S. Department of State, traveling to Brazil to take part in a series of performances, master classes and presentations through a Partners of the Americas exchange program.

An ardent advocate for contemporary music, Mr. Dolezal has collaborated closely with numerous composers, commissioning and premiering over one hundred new works. He served as Artistic Director of the Warebrook Contemporary Music Festival in Vermont, where guest composers have included Milton Babbitt, Martin Boykan, Donald Martino, Bernard Rands and Yehudi Wyner.

Mr. Dolezal’s principle cello teachers were Raymond Stuhl, Edward Laut and Yehuda Hanani. His chamber music coaches include such legendary musicians as Leon Fleisher, Raphael Hillyer, Eugene Lehner, Menachem Pressler and Alexander Schneider. He received a Bachelor of Music degree magna cum laude from the University of Kansas, and a Master’s degree from the Peabody Conservatory.

Paul Jacobs, piano
Paul Jacobs has performed extensively throughout the United States as a soloist and chamber musician. His repertoire includes the standard classical canon, 20th century and new works, as well as contemporary improvisation. Recent performances include Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center, Composer Focus Series in Cambridge, MA, and White Lake Chamber Music Festival in Michigan. As a recording artiost, he can be heard on the Navano label.

Mr. Jacobs is dedicated to new music and has worked closely with contemporary composers including Allen Anderson, Martin Boykan and Yehudi Wyner. He has premiered works by Allen Anderson in 2011 in Vermont and in 2013 at the University of North Carolina. His contemporary and 20th century repertoire includes solo piano music of Gyorgy Ligeti, Olivier Messiaen and Charles Ives’s Concord Sonata.

Working in the Boston area, he is a versatile pianist performing solo, chamber music, vocal accompanying, jazz and rock. He frequently appears in monthly performances at the Cambridge based “Composer Focus Series” which dedicates each performance to a different 20th century or contemporary composer.

He holds an Artist Diploma in Piano Performance from the Longy School of Music where he studied with Randall Hodgkinson, an M.M. from Michigan State University and a B.M. from Hope College. He currently teaches at the Concord Conservatory in the Boston area
