Vocalists Diane Penning and Paul Langford present a program from the great American songbook, Broadway and popular music with hits that include Almost Like Being in Love from the musical Brigadoon, Tonight from West Side Story, If Ever I Would Leave You from Camelot and Gershwin’s They Can’t Take That Away From Me.

The duo will also perform pieces from their show “Off the Charts” featuring songs that were number one or in the top 10 on the charts, like a Burt Bacharach Medley that includes  I Say a Little Prayer for You, Alfie and What the World Needs Now. Sprinkled in will be a few specially chosen songs that will be new and fresh.

Diane is thrilled to return to The Block and so excited to bring her wonderfully talented colleague Paul Langford with her. Diane is a West Michigan native and she and Paul Langford are our featured artists in the Holiday Pops concert on Dec. 11.

Diane Penning
In recent years, I have had the pleasure of singing with a variety of exceptional orchestras, including eight performances with the Elgin Symphony and seven with the Grand Rapids Symphony.

I have also had the honor of performing in duo with some outstanding singers such as tenor Doug LaBrecque and tenor Aaron Lazar.

For me, performing is both an artistic and a spiritual experience. It is deeply meaningful for me to create an experience for the audience that draws them into the artistry of the music. I also value creating a variety of moods in my performances--whether it be the poignancy of songs like Bernstein’s “Somewhere,” the lyricism of Rodgers & Hammerstein, or the levity of a comedic piece. I have been able to co-create programs that integrate a breadth of material, and I can provide arrangements which have been well received by orchestras and conductors.

Paul  Langford
A Chicago based singer, arranger, keyboardist, producer and conductor, Paul Langford has a career that spans over 20 years. His work includes arranging for and performing with groups such as The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Chicagoland Pops, the Pensacola and LaCrosse Symphony Orchestras, and for Walt Disney World.

As a singer and pianist, Paul has performed or recorded with Grammy award winners Celine Dion, David Foster, Kenny Rogers, Yolanda Adams, Abraham Laboriel and Heather Headley, and he’s shared the stage with Michael Buble, Josh Groban and President Bill Clinton. In the Christian music world, his credits include Glad, Steve Green, Larnelle Harris, Ray Boltz, Damaris Carbaugh, Tommy Walker, Mavis Staples and Alvin Slaughter.

His voice has been heard on radio and TV commercials for such companies as Ronald McDonald House, Oldsmobile, L.L. Bean, Old El Paso, Nintendo, Frigidaire and Nickelodeon. He has also led and arranged for choirs, rhythm sections, big bands, orchestras and acappella groups all across America and abroad, and is a published choral arranger and composer.

In the Chicago area, Paul can be heard singing and playing keyboards with the Tom VanKanegan Orchestra, as well as filling in with the Late Nite Band, and the Stanley Paul, Dick Judson, Bill Pollack and Paul Mabin Orchestras. Paul also owns and operates a state-of-the-art recording studio in Chicago’s northern suburbs, where he produces recording artists and composes music for video and film.
