WMS Principal Violist Arturo Ziraldo welcomes his WMS colleagues, principal cellist Alicia Gregorian Sawyers and assistant principal second violin Mark Portolese as well as guest pianist Sookkyung Cho for a program of chamber music for strings and piano, including works by Schubert, Beethoven, Bowen and more.

American violist Arturo Ziraldo is an engaging performer who believes deeply in the power of art to change the world for the better. Mr. Ziraldo is an intensely passionate musician and sensitive chamber collaborator. He has performed across the U.S. and Europe as a soloist and was a semi-finalist at the Washington International Competition. He began his professional career in the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra at age 19. He has since performed with orchestras across North America, Europe and Asia including the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Chicago Philharmonic, International Chamber Soloists, Orquesta Filarmonica de Jalisco and the Mainzer Virtuosi with whom he recorded the Four Seasons of Vivaldi and Piazzolla as Principal Violist.

Mr. Ziraldo is an avid chamber musician as has performed in and founded numerous chamber ensembles. He has performed at the Kent/Blossom, Spoleto USA, Casalmaggiore, Nançy and Deer Valley festivals. He studied chamber music intensively with Roger Tapping, the Muir Quartet, Paul Katz, Roger Chase, and Shmuel Ashkenasi. As a supporter of new music he has performed and premiered works by John Kennedy, Brett Dean, Peter Askim, Haruhito Miyagi, Keith Murphy, Curtis Curtis-Smith and others.

Mr. Ziraldo is the Principal Violist in the West Michigan Symphony Orchestra and has held the principal seat in many orchestras since his first professional engagements. He is currently the Acting Assistant Principal violist in the Kalamazoo Symphony as well. In addition, Mr. Ziraldo is an accomplished teacher who maintains a private studio and gives university and high school masterclasses and clinics. He was also Professor of Viola in the Merit School of Music's prestigious Tuition Free Conservatory in Chicago.
Mr. Ziraldo studied at the New England Conservatory, Haute Ecole de Musique de Genève, Roosevelt University CCPA and a Western Michigan University. His principal teachers were Roger Chase, Marcus Thompson and Igor Fedotov. He began his music studies on the cello at the age of ten, and began studying viola in 1997. He gave his first solo performance two years later. He performs on a viola by Scott Tribby, “anno 2005 in Kalamazoo, MI and a bow by D. William Halsey, 2012.
